The Weight of Imagined Fear
Why the stories in our minds often hold more power than in reality
Hello beautiful soul,
There’s a quote I return to often:
“We suffer more in imagination than in reality.”
I’ve found this to be true many times in my own life.
Our minds are incredibly powerful. They can build entire scenarios about what might go wrong, and those imagined outcomes can stop us from taking even the smallest step forward.
When that happens, I’ve learned it helps to slow down and ask a few simple questions.
Questions That Help Break the Spiral
What is the worst thing that could realistically happen if I take the next step?
What could I do now to reduce the chances of that happening?
If it did happen, how could I repair or recover from it?
What would be the benefit if things actually went well?
What would be the cost of staying exactly where I am?
Often the answers reveal something interesting: the fear feels enormous, but the reality is usually manageable.
A Gentle Reminder
Growth rarely asks us for perfect certainty. It only asks for the willingness to take one small step forward.
Sometimes that step is simply asking a better question.
